Italian cooking for the neighbourhood, seven nights a week

Noi

Noi has been on Audley Street in Petersham for seven years, a few minutes' walk from the station. It is small: 40 seats, the light kept low, the tables close. Italian, with a personality of its own. The kitchen cooks dinner every night from 5.30pm, and lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from midday.

The kitchen takes nonna's repertoire and cooks it for now: handmade pasta, produce that shifts with the season, dishes built for the middle of the table. Some of the work is done in the room. The cacio e pepe is finished in a wheel of cheese. An affogato is poured at the table, and a cocktail arrives under a bubble of bergamot mist. The cooking stands on its own; the theatre is a pleasure on top.

It suits most of what you would ask of a local restaurant: a Tuesday when nobody wants to cook, a birthday table for 8, a bottle with friends that runs longer than planned. Larger groups eat from a banquet rather than the à la carte, and the whole room can be taken over for a party of up to 50. Book online, or ring the restaurant on (02) 9337 7377.
